| For more information or to make an appointment, call (322) 209-1249 or send an email to info(at)salondivaspv.com. | | The heat and sun are here, we can feel it on our skin, we can feel it on our hair as well, summer has officially arrived. However, here in Puerto Vallarta, the hard water, Sun, combined with the effects of a poor diet, pollution, and air-conditioning, can mean that your hair becomes the bane of your life rather than your crowning glory.
A daily hair care routine and prompt treatment when problems arise are therefore of vital importance in maintaining the natural beauty of healthy hair. Here are some tips that will restore that "shine" and luster back into your hair. The other option is come and see me at Salon Diva's and I'll make it happen for you.
I also encourage readers who have any questions to write me at info(at)salondivaspv.com, like the women who wrote me these questions:
Q: I recently discovered a new hair spray containing sunscreen. Come on: Does my hair really need sun protection?
A: Only if you care about the way it looks. I guess you're thinking that because hair isn't living matter, it can't be damaged by UVA/UVB rays. While its true that hair doesn't undergo cancerous changes from sun exposure - just a little something to be grateful for - the same rays can penetrate the hair's cortex (middle layer,) weakening it's strength and elasticity; damage the cuticle (the protective layer,) making the hair dry and brittle; and oxidize the pigments, causing them to break down, which can turn the color reddish or brassy.
That's why many color-protecting shampoos and conditioners have sunscreens. Of course, some oxidation on untreated hair can also give you the pretty summer highlights. But if your hair is color treated, permed, chemically relaxed, naturally curly, or, and I sincerely hope not, all of the above, it's already porous and dry and extensive sun exposure will aggravate that condition. Deep penetrating treatments can do wonders during this time of year.
Q: I'm so sick and tired of my fine straight hair going limp in the summer. What's the best way to get more volume and body?
A: It's a question I get asked a lot in the salon. What I recommend to protect your hair and still add body is to only condition the ends of your hair after shampooing, then towel-dry and apply a volumizing mousse at the roots. Bend over and blow dry your hair upside down. Fine hair will usually begin to go flat by lunchtime. Revitalize it by doing the upside down thing again, but instead of using the blow-dryer, spritz some light hair spray only on the roots.
Q: How can I prevent my curls from becoming a ball of frizz in the humidity?
A: Beauty-related paradox: Hair, which is not alive, seems to have a life all it's own. Humidity causes frizz when moisture enters the strand, swelling it. There are a few ways to attack this situation. Use a rinse-out conditioner after you shampoo to help moisturize your hair, towel-dry; then rub a small amount of serum with silicone in between your palms and apply from the nape forward to the hairline around your face.
With a little serum still on your hands, wrap the curls in sections around your fingers. This sets the curls; don't touch them till they're completely air-dried. If your hair is coarse, use a styling cream instead of serum because it's heavier. Avoid gels, since they can make the hair sticky and stiff. Because of the silicone, you'll need to use a clarifying shampoo at least once every couple of weeks.
