Got Balance? Talvia Gathering Offers Life Strategy, Friendship Roberta Rand - SF Productions November 28, 2009
| Stop by the PV Beach Club on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm for an evening of friendship and teaching with Talia Genin. | | It's just after 6 pm on a Wednesday night at the PV Beach Club, as a diverse group of 15 people gather around the pub-style tables in the "upper room" normally reserved for beach club members. The magenta light from Puerta Vallarta's famous sunset is just beginning to ebb as everyone settles in for an evening of friendship and teaching from Talia Genin, an attractive blonde Israeli and former fashion designer, with wisdom to share on love, money, work and sex (not necessarily in that order).
"Tonight's correction is in the area of 'pair' relationships," she says. "Men and women are different from one another. Rather than criticizing, we must try to appreciate and respect gender differences. We must come from a place of love." She reinforces her point by punching up a queued-up CD. Strains of All You Need is Love emanate from a CD player.
The name "Talvia" - a blend of two words, "Tal" - from a Hebrew word related to a form of blessing, and "via" meaning "way." Talvia is Talia's name for a collection of insights based on centuries-old Hebraic wisdom that focuses on "correcting" faulty beliefs and becoming aware of subconscious drives and desires that keep people trapped in cycles of miscommunication, co-dependency and failure.
"Talvia gives you tools or 'corrections' that will help you achieve balance and harmony in all the important areas of life," says Talia "This is ancient wisdom that's been hidden in plain sight for centuries," says Talia. "All I have done is organize the information and make it easy to understand."
At the meeting held each Wednesday night at PV Beach Club, Talia acts as both teacher and facilitator, giving attendees the opportunity to share their own insights and experiences. Emotional transparency is encouraged. The idea is to help people take "baby steps" toward growth and self-improvement.
"All of us have things in our past - the lies our parents told us, our childhood experiences, our hurts and disappointments - things that have shaped our beliefs about ourselves and others," she says. "Talvia helps people 'correct' wrong thinking in four critical areas - thoughts, emotions, drives and values. It allows people to look at specific areas like finances and relationships, re-align their thoughts and change self-sabotaging behavior."
According to Talvia, there are twelve "corrections" that must take place for people to achieve a state of balance and harmony. For example, in the area of wisdom, Talvia adherents strive to move from being "right" to being smart.
In the area of sex, students are urged to be free in expressing sexuality, but in the context of a respectful relationship between consenting adults. In the area of love, the correction is to move from self-centered desires to loving others above ourselves and accepting people as they are. In the area of spirit, followers are urged to live in peace with what can't be changed.
Lost in Translation
Sometimes in their enthusiasm for a "new" life strategy, people will attempt to elevate it to the status of a religion - as the ultimate answer for every neurosis, pain and disappointment that ails humanity. Talia insists that Talvia is not a religion, but a method for self-improvement compatible with all religions that feature love as a basic tenet.
The printed literature for Talvia currently features language that may create confusion about the religion issue. In her efforts to produce an English translation of the original Hebrew version of Talvia, Talia depended on an overzealous translator who reworded the original text and inserted his own "spin" on Talvia that includes obscure purple prose and Kahlil-Gibran style exhortations to "embrace the myst."
The first page of the Talvia booklet features a poem written by the translator that describes Talvia as "the way, the all, the source, etc." Talia wants it understood that these ideas do not accurately represent Talvia. She is in the process of correcting misstatements and doing a new translation of the booklet.
If you would like to attend a Talvia meeting and make new friends, meetings begin after sunset (approximately 6:30 pm) on Wednesday nights. Attendees are invited to come early to watch the sunset from the club's oceanfront balcony (upstairs). Directions to PV Beach Club: After crossing the bridge to the Malecon, go one block past the first traffic light and turn right toward the beach. The club is located at the "dogleg" next to the Barracuda Restaurant.
