The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic.

As part of the celebration here in Puerto Vallarta, World AIDS Day will be commemorated by The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Community Center SETAC, providing free rapid testing by qualified and certified counselors, English spoken.

The tests, which take approximately 15 minutes, will be available at the center from 10 am-5 pm daily, Constitucion #427 corner of Manuel M. Dieguez, Col. Emiliano Zapata Tel: (322) 224-1974.

Free condoms, counseling, and information will be offered, without judgment, in an effort to raise awareness about HIV among vulnerable populations.

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV, including 2.1 million children. During 2008 some 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

The vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower- and middle-income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

Get tested, an HIV test is quick, free and confidential.

Celebrate being responsible for yourself!
The purpose of the SETAC Puerto Vallarta Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Community Center, located at Constitucion #427 on the corner of Manuel Dieguez, is to provide essential services to the GLBT community, including support in recovery from alcoholism and other afflictions, physical and mental health treatment and referrals, education and recreation in an atmosphere of safety, free from discrimination.
