To those that noticed there was no April newsletter, thank you! The month slipped by, full of holidays and vacations, and I was not able to get one out. This one will probably end of up being the longest one ever.
Though the "high season" has ended and many have returned north for the summer, there are still plenty of folks here and plenty of things to do! Let's get started.
Upcoming Health Clinics... All Clinics are by appointment only and to be scheduled through HealthCare Resources

A Couple of New Things...
Shingles Vaccine Finally, I have found them! $800 pesos - must be pre-ordered
Alzheimer's Testing - Dementia Testing $600 pesos This is called a Folstein MMSE. An office screening. Please contact me for further details.
Something Important to Start Thinking About...
For those that have returned north for the summer months, I suggest that you begin thinking about your insurance coverage when it comes time to return to Vallarta next fall. This should be one of your top priorities! We offer numerous options. Please email me for further information.
Something Really, Really Special...
Last October we did a fun and fabulous luncheon, limited to only 30 people. This was a way to network, share information and meet new people. It is a bit different than your "standard luncheon" with a lot of exciting ways to learn more about Vallarta and meet people!
On May 20, 2010, we will be having a "Spring in to Spring" Luncheon, hosted by Sazon de Liana. Just wait until you see the scrumptious menu! Space is limited so if you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible. And BTW, this is NOT just for ladies! Ask some of the guys who attended the last one. Good food, great information, prizes and fun!
Some Fun Stuff & Expanding your Horizons...
Saturday, May 8, 2010 - 11 am For years I have seen the Huicholes and their art. I didn't know much about it. After spending some time with Hilda, who has a Huichol shop downtown, I am not only amazed and further intrigued, but hooked on the artwork! On May 8, we will gather at her shop for a little learning experience, all about Huichol art. The symbolism, designs and color are fascinating. We will then proceed to the flea market for a yummy lunch of a typical Comida Corrida. Space is very limited for this informative morning, so RSVP as soon as possible! No charge. (Lunch not included.)
Saturday, May 22, 2010 - 11 am Expand your horizons and learn all about the enchanting world of glass making! The talented owners of "Miralo" (the very popular shop on Francisco I. Madero) have agreed to give an awesome demonstration of how it is all done. Learn about the equipment, the challenges and the beauty of mosaic and glassmaking. This will be an introduction, as well, for an upcoming, hands-on workshop to be held in the summer at Hacienda Jalisco. Watch for those upcoming details. The shop is not too large, so an RSVP for this talk is needed as well. No charge.
Some Bits and Pieces...
Polly Vicars of Becas Vallarta reminds us to ask to "round off" when you pay at the check out counter at Rizo's. Those round-offs go to Becas.
For those away for the summer and planning ahead for your return next fall, if you do not already have your accommodations lined up, the best resource in town with the widest variety of vacation rentals is PVRPV. Tim and his wonderful staff offer extremely professional service, so if you are looking for a Puerto Vallarta rental property, I urge you to contact Tim at tim(at)pvrpv.com, or check out his website, PVRPV.com.
Note the new ambulance number! Ambulancias Intermedic: (322) 225-9289. Ground and air ambulance services available 24/7.
New Life Mexico is much in need of school supplies for the Street Boys: Backpacks (new only please), pens, pencils, colored pencils, pencil boxes, notebooks - the works! Please help out!
There is still time to purchase your tickets for the Altruism Festival being held at the Hotel Marriott on May 2, 2010. It's going to be great - plan to attend! If you need tickets, you may contact me or Polly Vicars at phvicars(at)gmail.com.
Last summer we had a group of those that are here year-round, going to the movies together nearly every Wednesday afternoon. If you would like to be notified and put on the email list for these announcements, please let me know. It's nice and cool in there!
A good source tells me that a group, spearheaded by Chickie Alter and a small group of interested residents, has been meeting at her home with the directors of the new, ultra-modern, centrally located Teatro Vallarta to bring the Metropolitan Opera Saturday Afternoon Live Telecasts here this upcoming season! This has long been a dream of Chickie's and it appears to be near fruition as all parties are highly enthusiastic! Watch for further developments and details.
I am always in need of magazines, Spanish and English.
It's Time to Head to the Mountains! Our summer rates at the Hacienda Jalisco begin June 1, 2010. Consider an overnight getaway and escape the heat and humidity. Our vegetable garden is growing like mad providing loads of fresh goodies. The asparagus is especially good this year! We will begin our day trips to include lunch in June. Let me know if you are interested. They were a huge success last summer, nearly full each time.
Los Mangos Library/Sally's Corner Many of you have voiced an interest to volunteer and/or assist at Los Mangos Library and Sally's Corner. And I thank you! BUT out of all of those offers, only a handful of dedicated folks have actually done it!
During the summer, I will be making a schedule for November through April of next year. If you would be able to do even one program, that would be fabulous! These programs are done on Saturday mornings (10:30 am) at Sally's Corner. And no! You do not need to speak Spanish!
The programs (which are small groups of kids) are extremely rewarding. There are a million and one themes-ideas that you can do. It usually starts out with a small story related to the "craft" to follow. I am happy to give you an idea and supply the craft supplies. Think about it! We need you!
Los Mangos is truly a community center and participating is a way to really give back to the Puerto Vallarta community. I look forward to hearing from you. And, on that same theme, we are always in need of craft supplies, all kinds!
Watch For...
My articles have been sporadic this past winter. So many topics and so little time. Some upcoming topics/articles: Preparing for Summer Months in Vallarta, Tuberculosis, General Healthcare Information, HPV Vaccines, Traveler's Insurance, What To Do at Your Doctors Appointment, Attitude Factor, How to Network, Medicare Supplements - plus lots more. And please! Send me other ideas and topics!
