Mexico City – The Secretary of Health of Mexico City, Armando Ahued, recognized that the problem of alcoholism in Mexico City has increased to the point that women are drinking as much as men.
At the inauguration on Wednesday of the Prevention and Attention of Addictions Forum in Mexico City, the Secretary regretted that in Mexico City, the addiction problem is on the rise because children from 10 to 12 are now starting to consume alcohol.
He said that the most important problem to tackle is, precisely, alcohol consumption. He pointed out that according to a consumption survey in 2008, 11 percent of the male population and 1 percent of the female population in Mexico City use marijuana.
The survey also stated that 3.3 million people in Mexico have used marijuana. The Secretariat stated that 80 percent of the prison population in the county is addicted to some sort of drug as well as alcohol.
Furthermore, the Secretariat stated that prisoners with addictions should not be imprisoned but rather put in treatment centers in order to overcome their addictions, and should be treated as being mentally ill. |
