Health Secretariat Cautions on Cold Weather The News go to original December 15, 2010
| Health Secretariat José Ángel Córdova Villalobos | | Mexico City – The Health Secretariat (SSA) called on Mexicans to take the necessary precautions to prevent illnesses and deaths caused by low temperatures. A total of 10 deaths have been reported in Coahuila and Chihuahua.
People should also try to avoid contracting respiratory diseases and other health conditions such as intoxication by CO2 and burns, which can be affected by freezing temperatures caused by cold fronts.
“Since the 2010-2011 cold season started on Oct. 21, there have been 10 deaths registered up to Dec. 8. Two of those deaths occurred in Coahuila and eight in Chihuahua,” the Health Secretariat said.
The secretariat has prompted epidemiological surveillance across the country, and has organized health and vaccination campaigns in states and municipalities that tend to be vulnerable.
Among the secretariat’s recommendations are: to dress warmly, to avoid exposure to radical temperature changes, to cover mouths and noses with scarves so as not to breathe cold air, to avoid exposure to pollution, and to avoid smoking in enclosed rooms or near children, elderly or sick people. It is also important to drink plenty of water and to follow a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly in A and C vitamins. Using body cream will prevent skin dryness and will help protect it.
Regarding seasonal decorations, the Civil Protection Unit has urged people to keep a close watch on their decorations and lights, as they can cause fires. |
