Choosing to Have Surgery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

May 30, 2012

Located in Plaza Neptuno at the entrance to Marina Vallarta, Amerimed Hospital provides full medical services based upon U.S. standards of health care, and bilingual, U.S. Board certified doctors.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - For many the decision to live full or part-time in the Puerto Vallarta area revolves around the availability of good medical care. Fortunately, the cost of treatment is extremely reasonable and the quality of service is outstanding.

Edward Padalinski, a real estate agent with Ron Morgan Properties, had no apprehension about having his hernia surgery in Puerto Vallarta. He was originally diagnosed with the condition several years ago in the US, but waited to have the surgery for a number of reasons. When the pain became too great, he decided to visit Dr. Armando Joya Mungia in Puerto Vallarta and get a second opinion. Edward was confident in the doctor's abilities and the surgery was scheduled and performed in January 2012.

"Dr. Joya was fantastic," says Edward, "He gave me all the surgical options, laparoscopic or standard procedure and he was available the entire time I was in the hospital. He checked on me when I signed in, then right before my 8 am surgery, and again at 9 pm." Edward was impressed with the personal attention.

The procedure took place at Amerimed Hospital in Marina Vallarta. Inguinal hernia surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, but due to feeling faint when using the restroom, it was decided that Edward spend the night at the facility. The room had a lounge chair and his mother, who came to town for her son's surgery, was brought a pillow, sheets and a blanket so she could stay, too. "This is the newest hospital in town," says Edward. "They have the latest equipment, it's modern, and the staff was more than attentive."

Many Mexican doctors attend school and/or perform their internships in the United States. They also attend seminars, conventions and workshops there or in Europe. They speak English and make patients feel at ease when in the hospital or their office.

Medical care costs in Mexico are substantially less than in the US. Edward did not have American or Mexican insurance at the time of his surgery. He goes on to say that even when he did carry U.S. health insurance his deductible was $3000 USD. His hernia operation bill was around $2500 USD and he paid it in cash. He says a similar procedure in the U.S. would have cost at least $10,000 USD. There was no need to return to the U.S. for the surgery for monetary and doctor confidence reasons.

Waylay any fears about Puerto Vallarta hospitals by arranging for a facility tour. Contact the public relations office and see why many opt for treatment south of the border. There are several Mexican health insurance companies, including ING and Inbursa, plus many hospitals accept American insurance, however Medicare in not an option.
