Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Members of the Medical Society and the Navy Secretariat (SEMARNAT) held a Puerto Vallarta Reconstructive Surgery Campaign at last month's XII Annual Meeting of Medica Sur, with the assistance of the Medical Society President, Juan Alberto Nadar Kawachi. The annual medical congress was held at the Marriot Casamagna, July 11-15, 2012.
Surgeries organized by Alfonso Rodriguez of SEMAR Vallarta, which provided technical and logistical support for the campaign, have helped more than 890 patients in the states of Hidalgo, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Quintana Roo and Jalisco.
Surgeries performed included lip, palate and nose reconstruction for patients with cleft lip and palate, scar revision for burn victims, hand surgery, and ear restoration.
Surgical intervention offers children with these problems a chance to live better by regaining speech, appearance, and helping them to avoid social exclusion which they may be subjected to because of their own health problems.
The Medica Sur group is made up of experts in medicine, teaching, research and health promotion, and has held Reconstructive Surgery Campaigns for 12 years in partnership with SEMARNAT for the benefit of those lacking economic resources.
