Mexico City, Mexico - According to the Ministry of Health, or SSA, the number of suicides in Mexico has increased 300 percent over the last 30 years and represents one of the top causes of death in the nation.
In a report sent to Mexico's Chamber of Deputies, the SSA warned that currently an average of 4 out of every 100,000 Mexican citizens commits suicide, with the highest rates being among the country's young population.
In the case of men, the SSA declared that mortality from suicide in the group ranging from 14 to 19 years of age, represents 10.6 percent of the total number of deaths by suicide every year.
Meanwhile, the 20-24 year-old group represents 15.4 percent of suicidal death, and the 25-29 year-old group represent 13.7 percent of all suicides in Mexico.
Regarding women, in the same order of age frames, the percentages are 18.1; 17.3; and 12.1 percent respectively.
The SSA determined the need for the incorporation of a specific "intervention program" by the National Council for Mental Health as part of a course of preventive action for minors and teenagers.
It indicated that the purpose of this project is the prevention of suicide through risk detection, and to generate programs to reach this objective in every state.
