Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Dr. Adalberto Rodríguez Gómez, the director of the Jalisco Institute of Cancerology, announced that next year the agency will have an office in Puerto Vallarta to serve about 100 patients in the region.
During his speech at the "Sixth Annual Oncology Symposium," Dr. Gómez explained that people in the bay area who are suffering from various types of cancer currently must to travel Guadalajara to receive treatment, adding significant expense, physical and mental exhaustion, and loss of work, to their already difficult situation.
The new office will be completed sometime during the first quarter of 2015, but some services, including pain management, will be available as early as January.
Dr. Gómez explained that due to the lack of financial resources the new center intends to coordinate with Jalisco's Ministry of Health to provide space for chemotherapy, surgeries, and other high cost services.
"We considered other municipalities, but in the end we decided to start with Puerto Vallarta. We have also worked closely with IMSS, forming a partnership to insure we have the team, equipment, and supplies needed to operate the facility," said the doctor. "We have to be innovative to insure that care is within reach for everyone."
Dr. Gómez indicated that the Jalisco Institute of Cancerology had the resources available to get the Puerto Vallarta office working, but provided no specific costs or location for the new facility.
