Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Mexico's public health system - Seguro Popular, IMSS and ISSTE - ensure that all Mexico's population has access to medical care, and each system operates its own hospitals and clinics for those covered under each segment of the system.
Foreign residents may access the IMSS system, which does not have any age restriction, though some pre-existing conditions may disqualify an applicant. Costs are on a sliding scale, depending on age, currently ranging from $3,250 to $9,100 MXN per year.
To apply, one must provide the IMSS office with:
• Residente Temporal or Residente Permanente visa
• Passport
• Complete Application Form
• Two photographs
• Last Utility Bill (phone or electricity bill)
• CURP Number (obtained through Immigration office)
• Blood tests or other tests, as required
• Birth Certificate (legally translated)
• Marital Status (including legally translated marriage or divorce certificate)
Prescriptions issued by your IMSS doctor can be filled at IMSS pharmacies at no additional cost, however, not all medications are available and may need to be purchased at a private pharmacy. Another important note is that IMSS insurance does not cover eye care, dental, elective surgeries, infertility treatments, self-inflicted injuries or medical evacuation from Mexico.
Many foreigners living in Mexico purchase insurance to use the private medical system, but the IMSS system is a great option for those on a smaller budget to access quality, affordable healthcare.
