Fox Sports en Espanol to Expand in Mexico

Fox Sports en Espanol will launch a production facility in Mexico next month, aimed at serving its Latin American network and providing fresh programming for Fox Sports International's U.S. Hispanic channel.

The full-fledged video facility will produce a daily news program, talk shows and interviews wrapped around pre- and post-game coverage of major soccer tournaments, said David Sternberg, evp and COO, emerging networks, for the Fox Cable Networks Group.

The initiative is partly driven by the network's desire to target the U.S. Hispanic community.

"[Roughly] 65 percent of the U.S. Hispanic marketplace is of Mexican origin. For us, that's where a lot of the action is. We're very focused on delivering as much high-quality sports content from Mexico as we can," said Sternberg.

Sports commentator and journalist Raul Orvananos will host a biweekly talk show. The network has also hired a new play-by-play commentator, Jorge Sanchez, and has also brought in a new team of announcers to cover the National Football League, as the network has owned its rights in Mexico for more than 10 years.

As the pay TV market in Mexico has grown in size and importance, Fox Sports en Espanol recognized the need to provide more targeted local programming for its audiences there, Sternberg said.

Advertisers in Mexico include Corona, telecommunications company TelMex, Mexican department store Sanborn and local units of Ford, Nissan and Toyota
