Mexico Space Agency in the Works Yvonne Reyes Campos - The News go to original April 09, 2010
Mexico City – Congress’ Science and Technology Committee approved a bill submitted by the Senate Thursday to create the Mexican Space Agency (AEXA), which would be part of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportations (SCT) while remaining a decentralized and autonomous public organization.
During a working session yesterday morning, committee members modified specific aspects of the bill, including the location of the AEXA’s headquarters; while the Senate advocated for basing the AEXA in the Federal District, deputies decided that the legal address of the Agency could be in any state of the Republic.
Committee president Dep. Reyes Tamez Guerra said that this modification would be submitted to a vote during a plenary session in Congress.
AEXA’s creation would integrate Mexico into the international space community, the proposal says, while reinforcing scientific activity. It would encourage economic growth and place Mexico at the same level as other Latin-American space powers.
One of the main purposes of the project is to promote the effective development of space activities in order to expand the country’s capacity in education, industry, science and technology, lawmakers said.
