| For years, small corner grocery stores have been fighting a losing battle against the likes of Oxxo, Seven-11 and Wal-Mart. Finally, the Jalisco Economic Promotion Department (Seproe) is providing these beleaguered small businessmen and women with a helping hand in a bid to make their traditional operations more modern and competitive.
The new program will include 12 hours of instruction for grocery store owners, followed by individual consultations that include a full diagnosis of each stores specific situation. The program, called "Mi Tienda," will run first in Puerto Vallarta, Arandas and Tlaquepaque, before going statewide.
It is estimated that some 30,000 "tienditas" operate throughout Jalisco. To participate in the program, businesses must have been established for two years and be registered for paying tax. The cost to the store owners is just $300 pesos; Seproe will bear the full cost of the program, which its says is actually $8,000 pesos. |
