It is estimated around 1-million Americans live in Mexico and the majority are over 65 years old. The majority of American residing full or part-time in Puerto Vallarta are retirees. Over the past 20 years one man has studied the possibility of Medicare coverage for retirees living in Mexico.
Dr. David Warner of the University of Texas, continues to examine this possibility. He recently changed his focus to look at Mexicans, who moved to the US and became citizens and may wish to retire in Mexico. This group may want to use their Medicare benefits in Mexico. It is an interesting twist because this group has paid into the system but hopes to use their coverage in Mexico.
Most Americans now living in Mexico travel back to the United States to use Medicare. If the coverage was available it would cost less for Medicare and the patients could remain in their new surroundings.
