Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The word "brunch" has an interesting origin. In 1895 the term was coined in Britain describing a Sunday meal for "Saturday-night carousers." Brunch is eaten in the middle of the morning between the normal time of breakfast and the normal time for lunch. It serves as a substitute for both of these meals. Therefore, it's a combination of the words "breakfast" and "lunch."
Guy Beringer, a writer and student at the time, wrote an article which extolled the virtues of brunch. Basically it would allow a person to stay up later and get drunker on Saturday night and not be required to wake up early for church followed by the traditional English breakfast. That meal featured heavy meats and savory pies, so he thought why not a new meal, served around noon, that starts with tea or coffee, thus skipping church, too.
By eliminating the need to get up early on Sunday, brunch would make life brighter for Saturday night party goers. A remarkable visionary, Beringer thought that the meal could be accompanied by alcoholic beverages, thus paving the way for the traditional brunch drinks like the Bloody Mary and Mimosa. Most believe he was hung over on Sunday mornings.
The popular time to start the meal is usually after 10:30 am and served until 2 pm. But in a tourist and beach town like Puerto Vallarta, you can order brunch until late in the day.
In addition to their regular breakfast and lunch menus, Daiquiri Dick's Restaurant serves brunch daily between 9 am and 4 pm. The special menu is priced at just $145 pesos and includes all of the restaurant's most popular items.
