Keep Mosquitos Away from Your Puerto Vallarta Home

go to original
June 21, 2019

Of course, using a DEET repellant is the most preventative measure against getting bitten, but better yet is to limit the number of mosquitos around your Puerto Vallarta property - before they have a chance to bite.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Mosquitos are most than just annoying pests that leave you with an itchy bite. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in North America, they can carry an assortment of diseases, including:

• West Nile Virus
• Dengue
• Yellow Fever
• Lyme Disease
• Malaria
• Chikungunya
• Chagas' Disease
• Cyclospora
• Monkeypox
• Leishmaniasis

Luckily, in Puerto Vallarta, the largest concern with mosquitos is Dengue, a relatively mild illness with flu-like symptoms that typically last 2–7 days, and we have not seen outbreaks of other vector-borne illness in the region.

And, in better news, avoiding mosquitos and their bites is not very difficult for Puerto Vallarta homeowners. Here are a few tips to help you keep your property mosquito-free.

• Install screens on all of your home's doors and windows.

• If your house or condo has a terrace or garden area, be sure that there is no accumulation of standing water, which will attract mosquitos and encourage them to multiply.

• Try natural repellents, like citronella candles, place small pots of cloves around your home, or plant rosemary, mint or basil in your garden.

• Wear insect repellent when outdoors, especial in the early morning or sunset hours. In local stores, you can find a wide selection of DEET based and/or organic repellants, depending on your personal preference.

For Puerto Vallarta homeowners, mosquitos are a part of daily living, especially during the summer months, but with a little preparation, their bites can be avoided.
