| Honored Monday was Yesenia Pérez Rivera, who received the 4 millionth housing credit in Infonavit´s 30-year history. | President Calderón announced on Monday that the government´s principle housing assistance program will give top priority to the poorest workers.
"Our housing program will have an eminently social character," Calderón said. "We want to put into effect a large subsidy program so that the families that earn less than three times the minimum daily salary will be able to build a house, improve their existing home, or acquire an apartment."
The president was speaking at the closing ceremonies of the 90th general assembly of the National Workers Housing Fund Institute, or Infonavit. Earlier in the session, the new Infonavit director general, Víctor Manuel Borrás, was sworn in.
Infonavit operates by extending credits to workers for housing construction, improvement or acquisition. Honored Monday was Yesenia Pérez Rivera, who received the 4 millionth housing credit in Infonavit´s 30-year history.
Calderón said his administration would seek to double the annual number of housing credits delivered through Infonavit, setting a goal of 6 million for his six-year administration. That number, however, would include participation from the private sector.
"By the year 2030, we have to build as many housing units as were built in the entire 20th century," he said.
 BETTER CONSTRUCTION
The president also promised to find ways to improve the quality of the housing built with Infonavit financing. "Each house itself has to be dignified and attractive, as the law states," he said. "The commitment of housing contractors (to this goal) will be fundamental."
Attending the Infonavit session were Economy Secretary Eduardo Sojo, Labor Secretary Javier Lozano and Social Development Secretary Beatriz Zavala, as well as Joaquín Gamboa Pascoe, leader of the powerful umbrella union the Confederation of Mexican Workers, or CTM. |
