On Mexican Time
by Tony Cohan

Did you ever read that book, On Mexican Time? It's about an American couple who goes through the slow, painstaking, but ultimately satisfying process of building a house in Mexico. My girlfriend loved the book so much she reads it every time she takes a trip south of the border. She's read it quite a few times by now.

Me, I tried reading the book aloud with the dreadfully charming Mr. Right back when we were thinking of building a house in Mexico too. But neither the book nor the building dream stuck for us. We sailed into the sunset instead.

But here's the great thing: My bro and his wife DID build a house in Mexico - in Sayulita, a surf town north of Puerto Vallarta. And, even better, I'm there as we speak. And let me tell you, THIS PLACE IS BEAUTIFUL. You can check out the house on their website. (Yes, it's for rent - plus there are tons of other great houses on SayulitaLife.com in case you're planning a trip down here sometime).

Their house is called Casa Velas, which means House of Sails. The architect, who agreed to come out of retirement because they let him have free reign, designed it around the idea of using sails as sun shades. And, as you can see from the photo, it's a cool idea. The best thing about the house is that it feels like you're living outside, in the trees. We spend most of our time on the lanai, where palm trees come up through the pool deck. It's on the side of a hill where every room has a view of the ocean below. And all the showers are basically open air.

You can check out the house on SayulitaLife.com
Of course this means you're living with humidity and geckos and bugs too. The Bungle of Joy and her cousin have had a fantastic time listening to woodpeckers, looking at spiders, and watching an endless line of ants carry away a tiny dead frog over the course of a day. And there have been more funky, iridescent beetles than they can count. (OK, so the BoJ can only count up to 4 at this point, and she usually starts with 2, so...)

Anyway, it's outdoor living. Luxurious outdoor living. Which makes for a terrific vacation with my bro, our kids, and our folks.

The only thing that's missing is the dreadfully charming Mr. Right.

sniff. sniff.

Happily even after,
janna
