President Calderón Announces Social Housing Program for Central America Presidencia de la República go to original
| During the inauguration of the 10th Tuxtla Mechanism Summit, the president proposed restructuring the Panama-Puebla Plan to turn it into a Program for the Integration and Development of Mesoamerica. | | Villahermosa, Tabasco - At the inauguration of the 10th Tuxtla Dialogue and Agreement Summit, President Felipe Calderón announced a Social Housing Program for Central America, which will be financed using resources from the San José Agreement and reinforce cooperation and integration in Meosamerica.
He reported that a $33 million USD fund, which will be made available to countries in the region through the Central American Bank of Economic Integration, will finance the construction of up to 50,000 dwellings for low-income families in the short term, and half a million houses in the long term.
He said that the program is based on a model that has proved successful in Mexico in housing developmnt and that its aim is to provide to long-term solution to the housing lag in the region, as well as promoting economic activity in the area of construction. Mexico will also provide technical advice for countries wishing to participate.
In his address to the presidents of the nations comprising the Tuxtla Dialog and Agreement Mechanism, President Calderón explained that the experience in Mesoamerica made it quite clear that the best way of meeting global challenges is through solutions shared by nations with common interests.
The president suggested a thorough review and restructuring of the Panama-Puebla Plan, in order to consolidate it as a program for the integration and development of Mesoamerica, in order for it to meet the region's long-term development needs more effectively and therefore become a genuine Mesoamerican Project.
The Mexican president then called for the nations in the region to intensify political dialogue to "resolve our differences through reason, understanding, dialogue and the accurate search for solutions that will benefit our nations."
President Calderón told the presidents of Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama that "Mexico has a irrevocable commitment to the integration and integral transformation of Latin America and particularly to this region, Mesomerica, which spans the area from Mexico to Colombia." |
