A short drive south of Mexico City is Cuernavaca, the City of Eternal Spring. The climate here draws many of the country’s elite, including actors, politicians and businessmen. The city is also known as a place for second homes and retirement villas for international investors.
Most of these are from the United States and Canada, although Europeans are beginning to discover its charm as well. With some of the nicest year round weather in the country plus a location that is some 600 meters lower in elevation and has none of the pollution of Mexico City, this is an attractive place for property investors.
Cuernavaca has a lot to offer those who want to visit or buy a piece of property. There are excellent views of the Valley of Mexico and the volcanoes that sit on its edges. There are many resorts, including Las Mananitas, which is known for its garden with Zuniga sculptures, peacocks and flamingos. Additionally, the town is becoming a popular destination for language students who want to learn Spanish or even some of the indigenous dialects of Mexico. The small city is also popular for its many restaurants, which offer a wide variety of fare from local to exotic and foreign.
Downtown in front of the town square, or Plaza de Armas, is where you will find the Palace of Cortes, or Palacio de Cortes, where the Spanish explorer, conqueror and, to many, villain, spent his own time here. It has a great history of the country as well as paintings and murals by well-known Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
Many second home buyers in Cuernavaca want a piece of the town’s history, and they look to buy colonial era homes. There are also a number of newer homes built to resemble the older ones, but with more amenities. Many of these homes are located in gated villages with 24 hour security.
Being centrally located, it is easy to get to Cuernavaca and easy to get to the rest of the country. About an hour south of the town is the village of Tepoztlan, which lies near the Pyramid of Tepozteco. Acapulco is a 2 hour drive to the west, and the main airport in Mexico City is just over an hour’s drive to the north. |
