Despite delicate world financial and economic situation, tourism in Mexico is thriving, President declares.

President Felipe Calderón presented the most important tourist project of the past 25 years in Mexico: the Integrally Planned Center on the Pacific Coast, which will be located in Escuinapa and be twice the size of Cancún.

During the inauguration of the Mexican Real Estate and Tourism Exhibition 2008, the President said that Federal Government will assign nearly $5 billion pesos for its development to trigger private investment estimated at $66 billion pesos.

“This is the most important project undertaken in Mexico by the public sector. It is the most important tourism project of the past 25 years and will be also be the most important project in the first two decades of the 21st century," he explained.

He declared that according to projections by the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (FONATUR), by the year 2025, this development is expected to receive nearly three million tourists and generate 78,000 direct and indirect jobs and obtain profits of nearly $3 billion USD.

President Calderón added that the Integrally Planned Center of the Pacific Coast, a scale-model of which was presented at the end of the event, will significantly boost tourism in the country; it will create permanent, well-paid jobs as well as attracting investment, which will generate profits on both the regional and national scale.

In this respect, the President said that despite the delicate world financial and economic situation, tourism in Mexico is thriving and through its actions, Federal Government has shown that tourism is a crucial sector for sustainable economic development and the creation of jobs Mexicans are demanding.

Accompanied by Secretaries of Tourism, Economy, Communications and Transport, Environment and Natural Resources and Social Development, and Governors of Sinaloa, Nayarit, California Sur and Quintana Roo, the President declared that the zone where the project will be located has the potential of the Riviera Maya and the Sea of Cortez.

Lastly, he told investors that they can rest assured that Federal Government will continue to promote public policies in tourism as well as measures that have to do with economic stability, legal certainty and respect for the rule of law, which will translate into more investment, infrastructure and jobs for Mexicans.
