The Weekend Beat - January 24, 2009
email this pageprint this pageemail usPuerto Vallarta News with William Michael

Hi! Here's a look at local news on Weekend Beat. I'm William Michael.

For entertaining video reports covering everything from the hottest places to eat, drink and shop to information about attractions, events, and charitable organizations, be sure to watch Laura Gelezunas twice a month on The Banderas Beat.
Building Boom: Bald Mountain, based in Aspen, Colorado, will soon break ground on a large project in Riviera Nayarit. Hotels, villas and condominiums on the north shore of Sayulita are planned. This represents an 80-million dollar investment. The project really boosts the local economy with new jobs.

High Season is in High Gear: Puerto Vallarta tourism officials estimate that just over 600 thousand tourists will visit during these crucial winter months. The expected economic influx is approximately 200 million pesos. 2009 is going to be a great year for the leisure and business traveler with great deals and savings. The All-Inclusive trip remains at the budget forefront. These "packages" often include just about everything you’d want on a vacation, airfare, accommodations, meals, drinks, activities, entertainment, sports, spa visits, sightseeing and more, depending on the facility.

Billions Watched: On Tuesday January 20th, Barack Hussein Obama became the 44th President of the United States. Reactions in Mexico have been positive. Mexican President Felipe Calderon said, "I want to wish him great success and if the new president does what he can to improve the U.S. economy, it will also be a boon to Mexico’s. Obama's triumph could repair the battered reputation of the U.S., lift the aspirations of minorities everywhere, and renew the chances for diplomacy, rather than war."

Serving Up Fun: Café Roma started their weekly pizza fest on January 17th. Every Saturday at noon, the restaurant plays host to the less fortunate children of Puerto Vallarta. Pizza and juice is served to around 50 kids. This is all part of the organization Children of the Dump and School of Champions. The restaurant also collects donations for various needs. This past week over 10 thousand pesos was donated for an electrical transformer, which will run in the new 7th grade classroom. For more information, visit ChildrenOfTheDump.org.

Keep Smiling: A special dental clinic was held by PEACE, a local non-profit association, in Punta Mita last week and next week. Eight dentists with their assistants from the Academy of Latter Day Saints in the U.S. are cleaning and filling the teeth of the area’s youth. They are also providing education programs, so the kids can prevent cavities. This is the third year for the event and more than 400 kids will benefit from the service. For more information visit PeaceMexico.org.
