A BanderasNews Brief & Upcoming Events Mike A. Arevalo - PVNN November 06, 2009
There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.
PROFECO Says "No" to Unusually High Prices
For the purpose of protecting local consumers, PROFECO (federal consumer department) will start an operation to regulate prices on all highly consumed items. For example flowers. Over the next few weeks, PROFECO will visit flower shops all around Puerto Vallarta to assure the prices are what they are supposed to be. With the high demand for flowers during high season, flower shop owners might be tempted to double or even triple their prices, which is exactly what this operation is aiming to stop.
Happy Birthday Outback!
To celebrate the restaurant's ninth year in Puerto Vallarta, Outback Steakhouse will be throwing a big anniversary party on November 17th and donating a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales and auction items to three Banderas Bay area charities: Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza, Make-A-Wish-Mexico and Pasitos de Luz.
The Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza is a non-profit shelter for babies and children under the age of 14. Some of these children are orphans but most come from unbearable situations having been abused, neglected, or simply abandoned.
Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfills desires of Mexican children between three and eighteen years old who suffer from life threatening diseases. Pasitos de Luz is a mother's group who help children with disabilities like Down Syndrome and other birth defects. Their services are free including physical rehabilitation, specialized medical services and much more.

No Tax After All
After many years of dispute, it is official! There will NOT be a new tax for cruise ship travelers. For the last 8 years, the cruise lines and the federal government have been discussing an increase in taxes for all cruise ship travelers coming into Mexican ports.
However, this past November 2nd, it was confirmed that the increase, which was supposed to take place starting January 2010, will not be in effect at all. This is great news for tourist looking forward to coming to Puerto Vallarta as well as for PVs locals.
