Despite the intense international economic crisis and the fall in GDP in Mexico, the National Workers Housing Institute Fund (INFONAVIT) closed this year with 450,000 new housing loans.

According to Federal Government statistics over three years of administration, in spite of the crisis, INFONAVIT has granted 1.4 million home loan credits to the same number of families. This is an increase of 70 percent in comparison with the last presidential term's corresponding period resulting in revenue of more than 400 billion pesos.

In spite of believing that the economic crisis would completely halt housing loans and sales, the organization is finishing 2009 with 450,000 new loans.

The Government points out that it took 28 years for INFONAVIT to achieve its first two million credits while during the current administration INFONAVIT has granted the same credits in little over a year.

Among the data and statistics provided by the organization, it highlights that President Calderón considers preservation of the environment a priority. An example of this is the Green Mortgage Program, which consists of purchasing an ecological house and obtaining a better quality of life by reducing monthly electricity, water and gas expenses thanks to the use of ecological technologies.

This year approximately 100,000 green credits have been financed. These credits intend to promote sustainable alternatives to family needs without affecting the environment nor their heritage properties. By means of these credits, the workers have been provided with energy saving light bulbs and solar heating systems.
