Retirees Face Decisions On How to Spend Golden Years

April 12, 2013

The economic slump, the higher cost of living, & the price of healthcare has many retirees thinking about moving to Mexico where living expenses are less. That adds another consideration regarding housing.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Retirees face the big decision of where to spend their golden years. The choices could be keeping the family home, purchasing a smaller house or condo, or renting. The latter eliminates a bunch of expense and stress, which typically goes along with home ownership.

With the continued economic slump, the higher cost of living, and the price of healthcare many retirees are thinking about moving to Mexico where living expenses are considerably less. That adds another consideration regarding housing.

"There are several trends right now," says Edward Padalinski, owner and estate agent with Ron Morgan Properties in Puerto Vallarta and Bucerias, Mexico, "I am seeing people wanting a second home, younger people buying for future retirement, fixed income retirees moving to Mexico permanently, and people in their late 70s and 80s selling their Mexico home because their children do not wish to maintain the residence when the retirees decide to move back to the US or there is a death."

If a Mexico home is an option, Edward suggests renting first because it gives prospective buyers a chance to get first hand experience and also to become familiar with a particular neighborhood. Short-term rentals are popular in this tourist destination.

He also says many people who have been visiting for a number of years and have a good idea about where they wish to live, it may be time to get serious about a purchase since it is a buyers market right now.

Before any decision is made, thoroughly analyze finances and determine what can truly be afforded. Write up a plan and explore all the options and consider income after retirement. Crunch the numbers and you could be spending your golden years under the golden sun in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
