New Home vs. Used Home - What's Best For You?

You have decided to find your place in the sun. And here you are in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. You have so many choices; now the fun begins!

There are very real issues you must consider when when you decide to purchase a residence in a tropical climate like Puerto Vallarta. First consider this: will you buy a brand new residence or will you choose a resale residence?

When buying a resale property, there can be many pitfalls. Very often you run into non-standard or below code construction. That can include outdated wiring, non grounded electrical systems, fuse boxes instead of breakers, inadequate number of outlets, obsolete plumbing, poor water pressure, termite infested wood beams, and concrete walls that leach salt or moisture, allowing mold to grow.

This is quite common, as older construction was usually built by hand, and the concrete was made with beach sand that was carried up to the building site on burros and not adequately washed. These are things which only the professional eye can discover before it is too late.

Upcoming Mexican Holidays

April 17th, Palm Sunday, begins Semana Santa or Holy Week, the week preceding Easter. Other than the Christmas holidays, Semana Santa is the busiest week in Puerto Vallarta and is an important Catholic holiday. Streets in town become crowded and the Malecon is full of people watchers. Many Mexican families travel to Vallarta to spend a week at the beach. All in all, it is a very festive time.

May 1st, Primero de Mayo, is the Mexican national holiday equivalent to the U.S. and Canadian Labor Day. While many countries celebrate May 1st in many ways, including the old "Maypole" ceremony, here in Mexico it is a day of rest for the workers in their honor. Be aware that many government offices, banks, stores and offices will be closed throughout the country.

May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, is a special day that commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16th.
