Puerto Vallarta has lost one of its legends. Mary Sue Morris, owner of Viva Jewelry Store, died March 17, 2007 after a battle with cancer in Houston, Texas.

Lou Zeldis designs one-of-a-kind jewelry and he is making a very rare appearance. This is an unusual opportunity because Zeldis leads a secluded life. He crafts his pieces while sitting on a mountain top in Bali. He says he needs the serenity around him in order to make each piece unique.

He only uses organic materials. Jewelry created by Zeldis will last a lifetime. He can wrap a black river rock in gold for one of your ears, while wrapping a white river rock in gold for the other. He has used Burma's flat antique cut diamonds. And he has created hand woven bracelets made out of vines, leather and sea grass combined with antiqued Balinese silver clasps. Burmese weaving is some of the best in the world.

"Zeldis does this better than anyone else in the world and his designs are breathtaking," says Viva Jewelry Store Marketing Director, Scott Churchill. "He works quietly all year on his collection and comes to America once a year to show his work. We at Viva have become one of his biggest fans because our customers, both men and women of great style, crave the simplicity of his pieces."

Lou Zeldis has been represented by Viva Jewelry Store in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the past three years.

A great deal of jewelry is now coming out of Bali and many of these designers are famous around the world. They must change their jewelry line every six months in order to meet the ever changing and expanding market.

Last year one of these top names approached Lou and begged him to go to work for him to produce a new line of jewelry. But Lou said "No thanks. I know what would happen to me. You would produce a million of every idea I have, saturate the market and make my pieces common, then move on and leave me on a slagheap within a year." Zeldis has seen the fashion jewelry market come and go over a period of 40 years and people respect him for his integrity and commitment to his designs.

Born in the USA, educated in Europe, Asia and Africa, Zeldis worked in the theater in New York for many years but he was always attracted to creating jewelry and accessories. He became very interested in wearing personal charms while living in Peru in the 1970s. Their sense of energy appealed to him.

A simple charm is often recognized around the world in both very sophisticated, as well as very simple communities. Zeldis did his research of primitive ancient jewelry and objects before beginning to sell his version to a few special collectors.

"Some 'magic' is carried by the object through the construction of the piece by the designer and then into the owner's world" says Ana Margarita Rodriguez, Viva manager. "Zeldis aims for a quiet harmony and strength of form with a vital quality from nature itself to carry the message to its new owner."

Mary Sue is proud to play host to an artist who creates incredible objects that will never ever go out of style. They are to be worn daily as a talisman. His pieces are newly created antiques, combining ancient parts of nature with modern materials, both common and uncommon, all joined together in these neo-mystic charms of intelligent beauty, worldly interest, and unique honesty.

You are invited to a party at Viva from 6 to 11 pm on Wednesday, March 8th. Drink, sing, dance and meet Lou Zeldis at Viva Jewelry and Boutique at 274 Basilio Badillo in Old Town Vallarta.
