Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C. Fighting against HIV in the Banderas Bay region

| | For more information about HIV, testing, counseling, and risk reduction programs in the Banderas Bay area, visit VallartaEnfrentaSida.org or call (322) 223-0535. | | | Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C. (known as VES, or as Vallarta Confronts AIDS in English) is an essential partner in the fight against the HIV epidemic in the Banderas Bay region.
From their offices at Calle Hidalgo 457-1, as well as at health fairs held regularly throughout the area, the legally chartered non-profit provides free HIV testing and counseling, free condoms, risk reduction education and prevention programs, and referrals to medical and social services providers.
VES is an essential partner in the public/private HIV clinic that serves the region, known as CAPASITS (Centro Ambulatorio para la Prevención y Atención de SIDA e Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual.) Here, they provide the funding and personnel for essential patient counseling services, as well as laboratory analyses and medicines that are often not covered by public health care programs. They provide funds for clinic administrative and maintenance costs that are not covered by budgeted government funding.
The VES outreach staff frequently visits popular nightspots and locations such as public parks and plazas where sexual encounters are either arranged or frequent. Free condoms, counseling, and information are offered, without judgment, in an effort to raise awareness about HIV among vulnerable populations frequenting these locations.
It is the mission of VES to reduce the number of new cases of HIV infection; to assist persons and families already affected by HIV; and to eliminate the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV disease. We believe that by encouraging widespread HIV testing, by educating the public, and by ensuring that all those in need of treatment service receive it, we can bring the epidemic under control in Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding region, which currently reports the fourth highest number of HIV cases of any Mexican city.
For information, assistance, or to volunteer or donate, please see VallartaEnfrentaSida.org, send an email to contactos(at)vallartaenfrentasida.org, call us at 52 (322) 223-0535, or stop by our offices at Calle Hidalgo #457, at the corner of Calle Mina in downtown Puerto Vallarta, during business hours.
