Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Runners looking for a challenge can test their endurance this weekend when the 17th annual Carrera del Cocodrilo (Crocodile Race) returns to Boca de Tomates Beach on Sunday, July 26. Organized by the JC Razo Club, the popular event combines athletics, nature, and environmental awareness along one of the area’s most distinctive coastal landscapes.
The race begins at 7:00 am on the beach north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport and offers two participation options: a 4-kilometer recreational run for those seeking a fun outdoor experience and an 8-kilometer competitive race designed for athletes ready to tackle a demanding course.
Known for its sandy terrain and natural trails, the route winds through the Boca de Tomates area, which borders an important mangrove ecosystem and crocodile conservation habitat. Recent rainfall can make the course even more challenging, creating muddy sections and puddles that test competitors’ endurance, determination, and adaptability.
The event is open to runners in several age divisions, including Youth (14-19), Free (20-39), Master (40-49), Veterans (50-59), and 60 and over. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category of the 8K competitive race.
Beyond the athletic challenge, the Carrera del Cocodrilo also supports environmental conservation. Funds raised through registration are traditionally directed toward local initiatives that help protect native wildlife and preserve the area’s natural ecosystems, allowing participants to contribute to conservation efforts while enjoying one of Vallarta’s most unique sporting events.
