Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The expansion of Avenida Federación, a key roadway connecting Puerto Vallarta with neighboring Bahía de Banderas, has reached 70 percent completion, according to Jalisco’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP). Officials say construction remains on schedule, with the goal of completing the project in time for the opening of the long-awaited Amado Nervo Bridge.
During a recent inspection of the project, SIOP Undersecretary of Social Infrastructure José María Moya reported that the improvements cover approximately 1.3 kilometers of Avenida Federación, extending from State Highway 544 in Ixtapa to the new bridge crossing the Ameca River into San Vicente, Nayarit.
The expansion is a vital component of the complementary infrastructure supporting the Amado Nervo Bridge, which is expected to provide a much-needed alternative route between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas. For more than a decade, residents, businesses, and local leaders have anticipated the new crossing as a solution to growing traffic demands within the metropolitan area.
According to SIOP, underground water and sanitation work has already been completed. Construction crews are now focused on pouring road slabs, building sidewalks and curbs, and installing a dedicated bike path, bringing the project into its final phase.
Although seasonal rainfall has created occasional construction challenges, state officials report that work is progressing according to schedule and that there are no delays that would jeopardize the planned completion date.
Once finished, the expanded avenue and new bridge are expected to ease congestion on the existing Ameca River crossing, which currently carries most of the traffic between Jalisco and Nayarit. The additional route will improve daily commutes for thousands of people who live in one state and work in the other, while also benefiting visitors and streamlining the movement of commercial goods throughout the region.
Together, the Avenida Federación expansion and the Amado Nervo Bridge represent a significant investment in the future of one of Mexico’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas. As population and vehicle traffic continue to increase, the projects are expected to enhance regional mobility, strengthen economic ties, and support continued growth on both sides of Banderas Bay.
