Construction of the Civil Hospital of the Coast is moving forward in Puerto Vallarta, marking a major step toward expanding access to highly specialized healthcare across the region. While the project is well underway, state health officials say its long-term success will depend on recruiting and training enough medical specialists to meet growing demand.
Héctor Hugo Bravo, director of the Jalisco Health Services Public Decentralized Agency (OPD), said the greatest challenge is building the highly skilled workforce needed to operate the new hospital. He explained that attracting and preparing specialists will be essential for the facility to begin offering services when its first phase is expected to open by mid-2027.
Bravo made the comments during a recent visit to Puerto Vallarta for the launch of the Somos Uno y Vamos a Estar Bien program, an initiative focused on improving diabetes care for children and adolescents.
The Civil Hospital of the Coast is being developed through a partnership between the Government of Jalisco, the University of Guadalajara, and the Civil Hospitals of Guadalajara OPD. The project represents a shared investment of 1.2 billion pesos by the state government and the university.
Located next to the University Center of the Coast (CUCosta), the hospital will become the region’s first teaching hospital. In addition to expanding access to advanced medical care, it will serve as a center for educating and training future healthcare professionals.
Once completed, the hospital will provide more than 60 medical and surgical specialties, including internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, cardiology, traumatology, psychiatry, nephrology, and oncology. It will also feature emergency services, intensive care, and specialized treatment units, allowing many patients with complex medical conditions to receive care locally instead of traveling to Guadalajara.
The new hospital is expected to serve residents of nine municipalities in Jalisco, including Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, and communities throughout the Sierra region. It will also provide care for residents of Bahía de Banderas and Compostela in neighboring Nayarit, benefiting a potential population of more than 646,000 people. Approximately half of those residents do not have social security coverage.
According to Bravo, the region’s rapid population growth makes expanding specialized healthcare services increasingly important. However, he emphasized that modern facilities alone are not enough. Ensuring the availability of qualified physicians and specialists will be critical to delivering the advanced care the hospital is designed to provide.
A central goal of the project is to develop healthcare talent within the region. Medical, nursing, nutrition, dentistry, and other health sciences students will be able to complete clinical rotations, internships, and social service at the hospital, helping train future specialists closer to the communities they will eventually serve.
Bravo also noted that Puerto Vallarta’s existing hospitals, including the Regional Hospital, have strengthened their services in recent years. Even so, the Banderas Bay region still lacks a highly specialized public hospital capable of treating the most complex cases without transferring patients to larger cities.
When completed, the Civil Hospital of the Coast is expected to strengthen the state’s healthcare network by expanding specialized services, improving patient referrals, and increasing access to advanced medical care for uninsured residents. With successful recruitment and training of medical specialists, the hospital is poised to become a cornerstone of healthcare for Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding region.
