Downtown Vallarta Gallery Hosts Unique Day of the Dead Event

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Mexican art and deep-rooted traditions are set to take center stage in downtown Puerto Vallarta as the Art Walk Studio Gallery prepares to host a unique Day of the Dead celebration from October 31 through November 2.

The three-day event will bring together 16 visual artists residing in Puerto Vallarta – 13 Mexican nationals and three international artists. Each participant will craft a traditional altar paired with one of their original pieces, blending creative visual expression with honoring ancestral customs.

Outside the gallery, the celebration will fill the street with 12 food stalls serving traditional Mexican cuisine and treats, including tamales, pozole, buñuelos, pan de muerto, sweets, and fresh aguas frescas. Live performances featuring mariachi, marimba, and folkloric ballet will entertain crowds each evening from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, alongside face-painting makeup stations and photo opportunities.

To accommodate the festivities, organizers are working with local authorities to temporarily close the street for five days to allow for setup, the event itself, and dismantling. Because the required street closure permit was still pending at the time of the announcement, drivers should double-check traffic conditions downtown prior to attending.

Adding to the citywide festivities, Art Walk Studio Gallery is contributing a nearly four-meter-tall Catrina crafted entirely from corn and corn husks to the display on the Malecón.

The Municipal Tourism Office noted that 47 participants have already signed on for the Malecón Catrina display, with expectations to reach 50 exhibitors. Educational institutions, local businesses, hotels, and neighborhood families will also be constructing altars throughout the area.

This marks the first time Art Walk Studio Gallery has hosted an exhibition of this scale for Day of the Dead. Organizers hope the event strengthens local cultural identity, provides a meaningful showcase for regional artists, and helps revitalize downtown Puerto Vallarta as a warm gathering point for both residents and visitors.

Art Walk Studio Gallery is located at Pípila 170, between Morelos and Juárez in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
