Puerto Vallarta’s Emiliano Zapata Municipal Market will soon have its first public drinking fountain, giving vendors, residents, and visitors free access to purified drinking water while helping reduce reliance on plastic bottles.
The project is being carried out by SEAPAL Vallarta as part of efforts promoted by Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía to expand access to quality drinking water throughout the city.
SEAPAL Vallarta General Director Carlos Ruiz Hernández committed to installing the fountain during a meeting with representatives of the municipal market. The meeting was also attended by Daniel Alejandro Alarcón Pulido, the city’s Deputy Director of Markets.
Following that commitment, SEAPAL personnel inspected the market to identify the most suitable location for the new infrastructure. The fountain will be designed for both drinking directly and filling reusable bottles, making it convenient for people who spend time at the busy market.
Providing free drinking water can offer practical benefits for shoppers, vendors, and others who visit the market, while also helping reduce the need to purchase bottled water. The bottle-filling feature is expected to further support efforts to cut down on PET plastic waste.
The project builds on SEAPAL Vallarta’s experience with the same type of drinking fountain in 12 public schools throughout Puerto Vallarta. Those installations have provided thousands of students with access to fresh, purified water.
By bringing the program into a busy public marketplace, SEAPAL is extending a model already in use at local schools to another setting where residents and visitors can benefit from convenient access to drinking water.
