Mexico and Brazil Unite for Day of the Dead Concerts

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Music from Mexico and Brazil will come together this October as the Vallarta Symphony Orchestra joins forces with the University of Brasília Choir and Poder Coral for two special concerts marking the Day of the Dead season.

The performances will bring together choral and orchestral works from both countries, creating a musical journey that moves from Brazil to Mexico before culminating in John Rutter’s Requiem, the centerpiece of the program.

Brazilian composers Heitor Villa-Lobos and Éder Camúzis will be featured alongside works by Ola Gjeilo and Michael John Trotta. The program then turns to Mexico with Silvestre Revueltas’ Janitzio and Macedonio Alcalá’s Dios nunca muere, with music by Antonín Dvorák also included.

The evening will reach its conclusion with Rutter’s Requiem, bringing the orchestra and choirs together on stage for the first time during the program.

The concerts will be conducted by Aquiles Morales and Éder Camúzis, with sopranos Gabriela Ramos, Sarah Joy and Mari Gomes joining the performers.

The first concert is scheduled for Thursday, October 30, at 9:00 pm at Reina de la Paz Church in Marina Vallarta. The second will take place Friday, October 31, at 7:00 pm at the Haramara Auditorium at the UTBB Escuela Universidad Tecnológica de Bahía de Banderas in Nuevo Nayarit.

General admission tickets are $400 pesos, while seniors with INAPAM cards pay $350 and students pay $150. Tickets are available online, with a small additional service fee.

Beyond the performances themselves, ticket sales will help support music education programs for children in Puerto Vallarta. That gives audiences another reason to attend, with proceeds helping provide young people with opportunities to learn and develop as musicians.

IAMPV (Instituto de Artes Musicales Puerto Vallarta) is a non-profit educational music institute whose mission is to bring the joy of music to children and young adults in the greater Banderas Bay area. This is accomplished through a comprehensive program with many levels of instruction and different musical disciplines. Musical instruments are provided to beginning students.
