Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The Government of Jalisco has expanded its security strategy along the state’s Pacific coast with the installation of a new Highway Security Arch at one of Puerto Vallarta’s main entrances. Equipped with advanced vehicle identification technology and real-time monitoring, the system is designed to strengthen public safety and improve emergency response for residents and visitors alike.
Juan Carlos Contreras, director of C5 Escudo Jalisco, confirmed that the project is part of Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro’s initiative to extend advanced security technology beyond the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area to key cities across the state.
“Puerto Vallarta, being one of the most important cities in Jalisco, needs to have this technology,” Contreras said, emphasizing the city’s importance as both a tourism destination and a regional transportation hub.
The new arch has been installed on the city’s main access boulevard near the junction with the new Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta highway and the military zone. The location was selected because it serves as a major gateway for residents, tourists, commercial vehicles, and freight traffic entering and leaving the municipality.
Contreras also addressed speculation that the system might be used for automated traffic fines, making it clear that the technology has no connection to photo enforcement or revenue collection.
Instead, the system focuses exclusively on public safety. It uses license plate recognition, identifies vehicles by their physical characteristics, and analyzes traffic patterns to detect unusual activity. The technology can also help authorities quickly locate vehicles connected to emergency reports or criminal investigations.
According to C5 Escudo Jalisco, mobility data has shown that certain types of motorcycles are frequently used in street robberies, making vehicle recognition an important tool for supporting investigations and coordinating police responses.
In addition to high-resolution vehicle recognition cameras, the structure includes electronic message boards capable of displaying security alerts, important public announcements, and other significant information. Drivers will also receive notification that their license plates are being scanned in real time.
The system is directly connected to the state C5 command center and the Puerto Vallarta Emergency Call Center, allowing information to be shared immediately with municipal police as well as state and federal security agencies to improve response times during emergencies.
While this is currently the only Highway Security Arch planned for Puerto Vallarta, the same vehicle recognition technology will also be installed on surveillance poles at other strategic locations, including the highway to Las Palmas and Federal Highway 200 toward Tomatlán.
C5 Escudo Jalisco currently operates 77 surveillance cameras throughout Puerto Vallarta, and the new infrastructure further expands the city’s security network. The installation also follows recent security operations conducted between Las Palmas and El Zancudo, as authorities continue working to strengthen monitoring and investigative capabilities throughout the region.
State officials say the new system is intended to improve the detection, tracking, and interception of vehicles linked to criminal activity while enhancing emergency coordination and providing greater peace of mind for local residents and the thousands of visitors who arrive in Puerto Vallarta each day.
