Puerto Vallarta Athletes Win Nine Medals in Bulgaria

Puerto Vallarta celebrated the return of two exceptional local athletes last weekend as Francisca Rosario Pelayo Fuentes and Antonio Lamas Ávalos arrived home following an impressive showing at the 2026 World Down Syndrome Championships in Bulgaria.

A festive reception awaited the athletes at Puerto Vallarta International Airport, where family members, friends, municipal officials, and supporters gathered to honor their accomplishments. Mariachi music added to the joyful atmosphere as the athletes reunited with loved ones and shared the excitement of their international success.

Mayor Luis Munguía personally welcomed the competitors upon their arrival, accompanied by Municipal Sports Council (COMUDE) Director William Arredondo and Chief of Staff Andrés González Palomera. Mayor Munguía also congratulated the athletes for representing Puerto Vallarta and Mexico with distinction on the world stage.

Competing against some of the best athletes in their category from around the globe, Pelayo Fuentes and Lamas Ávalos achieved remarkable results, earning a combined total of nine medals in track and field events.

Pelayo Fuentes led the medal count with six podium finishes. She captured four gold medals in sprint relay events and the 100-meter dash, added a silver medal in the 200 meters, and earned a bronze medal in the long jump.

Lamas Ávalos also delivered an outstanding performance, winning two gold medals in relay competitions and securing a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash.

The emotional welcome reflected the pride felt throughout the community. Family members and supporters celebrated not only the athletes’ achievements but also the dedication and perseverance that helped them reach the international stage.

During the reception, special recognition was given to coach Armando Rodríguez for his guidance and commitment. Municipal officials also acknowledged the vital support provided by the athletes’ families, whose encouragement played an important role in their success.
