Puerto Vallarta Closes July Above National Occupancy Forecast

Puerto Vallarta wrapped up July with hotel occupancy near 68 percent, outperforming the national forecast for the 2026 summer vacation season and giving the local tourism industry a positive foundation for the months ahead.

The figure was slightly below the occupancy recorded in July 2025, but local hoteliers say the destination continues to show healthy demand. Abel Villa Sánchez, president of the Puerto Vallarta Hotels and Motels Association, described the result as encouraging despite the year-over-year decline.

For comparison, Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism projected average hotel occupancy of 65 percent nationwide during the summer vacation period. Puerto Vallarta’s July performance placed the destination three percentage points above that national projection. The result highlights the continued appeal of the coastal destination even as the hotel industry works to recover the occupancy levels seen during last year’s summer.

Rather than focusing solely on the annual comparison, the local hotel sector is already looking toward the next major opportunity: the winter tourism season.

Winter traditionally brings some of Puerto Vallarta’s strongest visitor demand, supported by travelers from Mexico and international markets. According to Villa Sánchez, early signals from airlines and commercial partners are encouraging, with demand pointing toward a solid season ahead. “We are hopeful that the winter season will perform very well,” he said, noting that current indicators suggest continued interest in Puerto Vallarta.

If those expectations translate into bookings and arrivals, the final months of 2026 could provide an important boost to hotel occupancy and help the destination regain ground before entering the peak winter tourism season.
