Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Department is reinforcing beach safety efforts after lifeguards completed at least 11 aquatic rescues since the start of the summer vacation season, highlighting the importance of following posted warnings and lifeguard instructions.
Salvador Castillón, the department’s head lifeguard, said the increase in visitors during the busy holiday period makes prevention more important than ever, particularly as changing ocean conditions can quickly become dangerous.
The most recent rescue took place Tuesday afternoon at Playa de Oro, where lifeguards safely assisted four people who had entered the water despite a red warning flag. Thanks to the team’s rapid response, the situation was brought under control before anyone was seriously harmed.
Officials explained that a red flag means entering the sea is prohibited because conditions such as strong currents, high waves, or other hazards make swimming unsafe. Yellow flags indicate that swimming is allowed with caution, and beachgoers should carefully follow lifeguard instructions.
Purple flags warn of the possible presence of harmful marine life. Authorities also continue to advise residents and visitors to stay out of river mouths and canals, where preventive measures remain in place due to the potential presence of crocodiles.
The second half of July has brought a steady increase in visitors to Puerto Vallarta, with many travelers arriving from Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mexico City, and cities throughout the Bajío region. Combined with wave activity influenced by recent weather systems, the larger crowds have increased the need for heightened beach safety awareness.
Authorities emphasized that even when the ocean appears calm, hidden currents and sudden changes in wave conditions can create dangerous situations for swimmers who are unfamiliar with local conditions.
Lifeguards remain stationed at beaches across the municipality throughout the summer holiday season, providing constant surveillance and assistance. However, officials stressed that public cooperation is equally important.
Civil Protection encourages everyone to respect the beach flag system, avoid entering the water when restrictions are in effect, and follow lifeguard instructions at all times.
