Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta has taken a major step toward modernizing its public transportation system with the arrival of the first articulated electric buses, signaling the start of a new era in sustainable urban mobility.
The first eight of 100% electric vehicles arrived in the city last week and are expected to begin operating before the end of the month as part of a project led by the Government of Jalisco.
The new transportation system will serve the busy Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue corridor, connecting key destinations including the Hotel Zone, Marina Vallarta, Ixtapa, and the University Center of the Coast (CUCosta). Designed to improve mobility along one of the municipality’s busiest routes, the system aims to offer faster, cleaner, and more efficient public transit.
Each articulated bus measures 18 meters in length and can carry up to 130 passengers. Their accordion-style design allows the vehicles to navigate busy streets smoothly while maintaining stability and maneuverability, making them well suited for high-demand routes.
According to the Jalisco Secretariat of Transportation (Setran), the buses are equipped with air conditioning, low-floor boarding for universal accessibility, and USB charging ports for passengers’ mobile devices, providing a more comfortable travel experience.
The initial phase of the project includes 19 electric buses supported by an infrastructure of 11 main stations and 110 designated stops along the route. Officials estimate the buses will arrive approximately every five minutes, helping reduce wait times and improve connectivity throughout the corridor.
Passengers will pay their fares using the Mi Movilidad prepaid card, the same system already used throughout Jalisco, allowing seamless integration with other public transportation services across the state. Discounted fares for students will remain available. Mi Movilidad cards can be obtained at the UNIRSE office on Avenida de los Grandes Lagos in Fluvial Vallarta.
The system is expected to officially begin service by the end of July, coinciding with a visit from Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro, who is scheduled to lead the formal launch of the project.
The introduction of these electric articulated buses represents one of Puerto Vallarta’s most significant public transportation investments in recent years. By combining zero-emission technology, increased passenger capacity, improved accessibility, and modern amenities, the project is expected to enhance daily travel while supporting a cleaner and more efficient transportation network for the city.
