Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – One of Puerto Vallarta’s most cherished seasonal traditions is getting underway as the first sea turtle hatchlings of the season prepare to make their way into Banderas Bay. The releases offer residents, visitors, schools and community groups an opportunity to witness these tiny reptiles begin their journey while learning more about marine conservation.
Sea turtles return to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding Banderas Bay coastline each year from late June through mid-December to lay their eggs. Because nests can be vulnerable to waves, predators, people and other threats, conservation teams carefully relocate the eggs to protected turtle camps, where they can develop under controlled conditions.
The Municipal Departments of Environment and Ecology work alongside marine biologists and volunteers to protect the nests and monitor the incubation process. After roughly 45 days, the hatchlings begin emerging from their eggs and are prepared for release once they are strong enough to enter the sea.
This year, the Government of Puerto Vallarta, through its Directorate of Environmental Sustainability, is inviting families, schools, businesses, institutions and community organizations to take part in the first releases of the season at Holi Beach.
The experience goes beyond simply watching the turtles reach the water. Participants may give the hatchlings names, offer them a wish for good luck and then release them at the shoreline – knowing that some of these very same turtles will return to Puerto Vallarta’s beaches a decade from now to continue the cycle.
The release program is designed to encourage greater awareness of marine wildlife and demonstrate why protecting nesting beaches and sea turtle populations matters. It also provides an educational opportunity for younger participants to see conservation efforts firsthand.
Those attending are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and sandals. Group participation is limited, so advance registration is required. Interested groups should send a private message through the official Facebook page of the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability to receive information about upcoming dates and times.
The turtle releases also provide an opportunity to support Puerto Vallarta’s Animal Welfare Department. Participants may bring requested cleaning supplies, including laundry detergent, bleach, air freshener, squeegees, brooms, Kirkland extra-large absorbent mats and Scott Shop blue paper, all available at Costco and Sam’s Club.
Donations of pet food are also welcome in specified sizes, including Canin Club adult dog food in 22-kilogram bags, Kirkland puppy food in 9-kilogram bags, Cat Chow adult food in 9.5-kilogram bags and Cat Chow kitten food in 1.5-kilogram bags.
For many participants, the highlight will be the moment the tiny turtles reach the water and disappear into the bay. The simple act of releasing a hatchling offers a close-up look at one of nature’s most remarkable journeys while reinforcing the importance of protecting the beaches these animals depend on.
