Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – SEAPAL Vallarta is preparing to launch the first stage of its Public Drinking Fountains program, an initiative designed to make free, quality drinking water more accessible to residents and visitors throughout Puerto Vallarta.
Supported by Mayor Luis Munguía, the program will complement SEAPAL Vallarta’s existing School Drinking Fountain initiative while extending access to public spaces where large numbers of people gather. The new fountains will serve residents, athletes, students, workers and tourists, providing a convenient source of clean, safe drinking water.
Seven modern drinking fountains will be installed during the program’s first phase at strategic locations across the municipality. Three will be placed at the Agustín Flores Contreras Sports Unit, while additional fountains will be installed at the La Lija Cultural Center and Sports Module, SEAPAL Vallarta headquarters, the Municipal Administrative Unit (UMA), and the Malecón.
The Malecón installation has already been discussed with residents and local merchants in the city center. According to SEAPAL Vallarta, the consultation is part of an effort to encourage dialogue and build agreement around the placement of the new public infrastructure.
The fountains will be especially useful during Puerto Vallarta’s hot season, when staying properly hydrated becomes increasingly important. Athletes and people spending time outdoors will have access to drinking water without having to purchase bottled beverages.
The program could also provide an environmental benefit by encouraging people to carry and refill reusable bottles. By making drinking water readily available in public, sports and tourist areas, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles and the waste they generate.
SEAPAL said the program reflects its commitment to expanding access to quality water while creating infrastructure that supports public health, convenience and environmental responsibility.
With drinking fountains planned for sports facilities, cultural spaces, government offices and the Malecón, the first phase will bring free drinking water to several of Puerto Vallarta’s busiest areas. The initiative is expected to make everyday activities more convenient while supporting a healthier and more sustainable city for both residents and those who come to visit.
