Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The remodeled section of Avenida México that extends the Malecón and runs in front of Hidalgo Park was officially inaugurated this week, following almost a year of work aimed at improving mobility in the city center. However, questions remain about whether the newly renovated street will be open to vehicles or reserved primarily for pedestrians.
The inauguration was led by Mayor Luis Munguía, accompanied by members of the City Council, municipal officials, and local business owners. The project reorganizes the roadway to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists while maintaining the possibility of vehicle access.
Located in one of downtown Puerto Vallarta’s busiest areas, the avenue connects the Malecón, Hidalgo Park, nearby businesses, and tourist services. Its location makes it an important public space for residents and visitors, particularly during the high tourist season, when pedestrian traffic increases significantly.
Despite the improvements, the street’s future use remains a subject of debate. Some business owners have urged the municipality to keep the renovated section closed to vehicles, arguing that the pedestrian-friendly conditions during construction made it easier for customers and passersby to explore the area and visit their establishments. They want those conditions to continue now that the work is complete.
Other residents and motorists, however, want Avenida México reopened to traffic, pointing to its role in the downtown road network and the need to maintain access for drivers.
The discussion also comes amid ongoing debate over whether vehicles should return to the Puerto Vallarta Malecón. After months of waiting for the results of a public consultation on that question, Munguía reported that more participants supported reopening the waterfront promenade to cars. However, he acknowledged that the difference between the two positions was very narrow.
Given the close results, the mayor said the municipal government would seek another public consultation before making a final decision on the Malecón’s future.
For Avenida México, one option under consideration is a system of temporary openings and closures that would allow vehicles during certain periods while reserving other times for pedestrian activity. The proposal is intended to balance the needs of businesses, motorists, cyclists, and people walking through the area.
The mayor confirmed that the City Council has met with local business owners to discuss possible arrangements. However, officials have not announced a schedule, implementation date, or final operating plan for the remodeled avenue.
For now, the inauguration marks the completion of a long-awaited project, but questions about how the space will be used remain unresolved. The municipality must still determine how to balance pedestrian access, commercial activity, and traffic circulation in one of Puerto Vallarta’s busiest downtown areas.
