Puerto Vallarta Sees 285K Cruise Passengers in First Half of 2024

Puerto Vallarta welcomed 285,635 cruise passengers from January to June 2024, reflecting a 13.8% increase compared to the same period in 2019. This surge is attributed to the concerted promotional efforts by the Government of Jalisco, through the Ministry of Tourism (Secturjal), and the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust.

The beach destination saw 94 cruise ships arrive in the first half of the year, making it a top choice for those traveling the Mexican Riviera route. January was the busiest month, with 72,889 passengers disembarking.

The Jalisco government, through the Ministry of Tourism and the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, has actively promoted the destination to international cruise lines. These efforts, combined with infrastructure improvements to the port and surrounding beaches, have contributed to Puerto Vallarta’s growing popularity among cruise travelers.

“Cruise tourism is crucial for the local economy. We have made significant progress in upgrading dock infrastructure and enhancing beach facilities to improve the experience for cruise passengers,” said Vanessa Pérez Lamas, Secretary of Tourism of Jalisco.

Puerto Vallarta was prominently featured at the Seatrade Cruise Global 2024, setting the stage for continued growth in the coming years. The port currently accommodates three ships simultaneously, hosting major cruise lines such as Princess Cruises, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

The Mexican Riviera route, a popular cruise itinerary originating from Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego in California, features Puerto Vallarta alongside Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán. These cruises primarily cater to passengers from the US, but international interest is growing.

Thanks to its strategic location, modern infrastructure, diverse attractions, and welcoming community, Puerto Vallarta has solidified its position as a leading cruise port in Mexico.
