Amazon Unveils Plans for ‘The Boys’ Spinoff in Mexico City

Mexico City – The world of “The Boys” could soon be expanding to Mexico. Amazon is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Spanish-language spinoff set against the vibrant backdrop of Mexico City. Drawing inspiration from the Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson comic books, the exact plot details of the new series remain shrouded in mystery.

Like its predecessor, the untitled spinoff will be a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, acclaimed for his recent work on the DC film “Blue Beetle,” is said to be on board as the writer. Leading the executive production team are heavyweights such as Erik Kripke of Kripke Enterprises, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver of Point Grey Pictures, as well as Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing to bring aboard Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal as executive producers under their La Corriente del Golfo banner.

If the project gets the green light, it will mark the third series in “The Boys” universe, following the original show, set to air its fourth season in 2024, and the recent debut of “Gen V.” The latter, centered around a superhero college run by Vought International, premiered on Sept. 29 and quickly secured a second season renewal in October. Preceding “Gen V” was the animated anthology series “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” featuring standalone stories with familiar characters voiced by the original cast.

This move echoes Amazon’s strategy to explore local language productions for their streaming hits. Following this pattern, Amazon is reportedly gearing up for spinoffs of the espionage thriller “Citadel,” with plans for localized versions set in India, Italy, and beyond.

“The Boys” has undeniably become one of Amazon’s streaming gems since its 2019 debut, consistently ranking high on Nielsen streaming charts. The show’s success is further highlighted by eight Emmy nominations, including a nod for best drama series in 2021. As Amazon continues to expand its streaming portfolio, the anticipation for the Mexican spinoff adds a new layer of excitement for fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this dark and enthralling superhero saga.
