The ranking considers several factors that influence international patients, including the quality and reliability of healthcare, specialist expertise, medical technology, treatment costs, waiting times and the infrastructure available to support patients during recovery.
Mexico’s strong showing reflects the country’s growing medical tourism sector, particularly its private healthcare network. TTW points to the combination of specialized services and treatment costs that are often substantially lower than those found in the United States and Canada.
A Different Kind of Reason to Visit
Puerto Vallarta’s appeal as a medical tourism destination goes beyond the operating room.
The city already has a well-developed tourism industry, a large selection of accommodations and extensive air connections, particularly with the United States. Those advantages can make the destination practical for patients who need to travel for treatment and for family members who accompany them.
The local medical sector includes more than a dozen specialized hospitals and clinics. Services range from urology, dentistry and ophthalmology to aesthetic medicine and other specialized procedures.
The availability of certified bilingual specialists is another important factor for international patients. Being able to discuss a diagnosis, treatment plan and recovery directly with a physician in English can make the process considerably easier.

A specialized local facility is using artificial intelligence tools as part of its efforts to improve the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. The technology provides specialists with additional information when evaluating diagnostic studies.
And the city’s medical capacity is poised for an even larger addition.
A new private hospital under development will include emergency services, intensive and intermediate care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care, and more than seven state-of-the-art operating rooms. Plans also call for labor and delivery and gynecology services, hemodynamics, specialized cardiology, clinical laboratory and advanced imaging departments.
The project will also include a medical tower with more than 40 consulting rooms.
Meanwhile, existing clinical laboratories and imaging centers continue upgrading their equipment, adding to the range of diagnostic services available locally.
More Than a Vacation Destination
Mexico’s placement near the top of TTW’s international ranking reflects a broader shift in the way people think about traveling for healthcare. Cost remains an important consideration, but patients are also looking for qualified specialists, modern facilities and an environment where they can feel comfortable before and after treatment.
For Puerto Vallarta, those factors come together in an unusual way. The city can offer specialized medical care and modern diagnostic technology while also providing the accommodations, transportation, rehabilitation services and hospitality that can make an extended stay easier.
Its sixth-place national ranking suggests that medical tourism is becoming another important part of Puerto Vallarta’s identity – one that exists alongside, rather than separate from, its long-established tourism industry.
