Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – One of Puerto Vallarta’s longest-running traditions returns this weekend as thousands of families gather in Las Palmas for the annual Paseada. Combining horseback riding, live music, regional food, and community spirit, the nearly century-old celebration continues to honor local heritage while welcoming visitors from across the region.
The Las Palmas Delegation, located about 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta, is preparing to welcome more than 10,000 visitors on Sunday, July 26, for the traditional Paseada de las Palmas. Held each year at Llano de la Palma Sola, the event has become one of the region’s most beloved summer celebrations, drawing families from Puerto Vallarta, Bahía de Banderas, neighboring communities, and even the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
The Paseada traces its roots back to 1931, when Doña Hilaria Pineda organized a family outing to Llano de la Palma Sola. The gathering was intended to bring local families together to share a picnic, enjoy each other’s company, and strengthen community ties. Over the decades, that tradition has grown into a major annual festival while preserving the values that inspired it.
Originally connected to the celebration of Saint Anne, the patron saint honored in Las Palmas during July, the event featured unmarried women riding horses while local families spent the day picnicking together. As the years passed, the celebration expanded into a lively community festival that still reflects the area’s rural heritage and agricultural roots.
For generations, Las Palmas has been known for livestock farming and agriculture, making horseback riding and charro traditions an important part of the community’s identity. Today, the Paseada continues to celebrate that history with horseback rides through the countryside, one of the festival’s signature attractions.
Visitors can also enjoy live regional music, dancing, traditional Mexican food and snacks, and plenty of opportunities to gather with family and friends in a festive outdoor setting. The horseback rides are scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, launching a full day of entertainment and community activities.
Municipal authorities have been working closely with the 41st Military Zone, the Las Palmas Ejido, and local organizers to ensure the celebration is both safe and enjoyable. Under the coordination of Mayor Luis Munguía’s administration, final preparations include security planning, logistics, and services for the large number of expected visitors.
To help ensure a smooth event, access checkpoints will be installed, and Civil Protection personnel, firefighters, and Municipal Police officers will maintain a strong presence throughout the day. These coordinated efforts are designed to provide a safe environment so families can focus on enjoying one of Puerto Vallarta’s most cherished traditions.
Nearly a century after it began, the Paseada de las Palmas continues to bring together generations of residents and visitors, celebrating the culture, history, and strong sense of community that define this historic district.
