British Author Diane M. Hinds to Speak at The Living Room Bookstore

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Diane M. Hinds, MA, author of the acclaimed historical novel Conquerabia: The Struggle for Identity, will give a talk at The Living Room Bookstore & Cafe, 1377 Colombia, 5 de Diciembre, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at 5:00 pm on 25 September 2026.

The appearance marks a significant milestone for Hinds, whose sweeping historical drama traces the island now known as Trinidad, birthplace of both her parents, from Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1498, through Spanish colonisation, to its eventual cession to Britain in the eighteenth century. Told through the intersecting lives of governors, enslaved people, indigenous communities and free citizens, the novel examines how identity is forged in the collision of cultures, and how resilience endures across generations.

Mexico’s own history as a former Spanish colony gives the Puerto Vallarta stop particular weight. Like Trinidad, Mexico’s identity was forged through conquest, the displacement and enslavement of indigenous peoples, and centuries of cultural blending under Spanish rule, followed by a long, hard-won path toward independence and self-definition.

Hinds’s talk will trace these parallel histories directly, comparing how Trinidad and Mexico each absorbed colonial upheaval and transformed it into distinct, resilient identities. For an audience shaped by its own indigenous, Spanish and mestizo lineages, the comparison offers a mirror as much as a history lesson, inviting Puerto Vallarta readers to see their own inheritance reflected in Trinidad’s story.

“Although I was born in Britain, Trinidad has always lived in me through my parents’ stories, memories passed down of a place shaped by centuries of collision and endurance. Being born in the UK and of a minority, I felt displaced. Writing Conquerabia helped me find my own identity and sense of belonging, and gave me a way to honour that inheritance, to give voice to the governors, the enslaved, the indigenous people and the free citizens who built an identity out of upheaval. To share that story in Mexico, a nation with its own profound Spanish colonial history, feels like a natural continuation of the conversation. I hope audiences in Puerto Vallarta will see their own histories reflected in Trinidad’s, and recognise how resilience so often becomes the truest measure of identity.” – Diane M. Hinds, MA, author of Conquerabia: The Struggle for Identity

The appearance also coincides with growing interest in the novel among Spanish-language readers and publishers, as Hinds pursues translation rights for the Spanish-language market ahead of the event.
