Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – Chivas is set to return to its historic home at Estadio Jalisco as preparations begin to renovate Estadio Akron for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The temporary move marks a nostalgic moment for the club, which played at Estadio Jalisco from 1960 to 2010, winning many of its most important championships there.
Estadio Akron, which opened in 2010, is about to undergo a $12.4 million renovation. This investment will help the stadium meet FIFA’s high standards ahead of the World Cup, where it is scheduled to host four matches. Among the most important upgrades will be the installation of hybrid grass of FIFAPro quality — making Akron the first stadium in Mexico with this technology. A new world-class drainage system will also be installed, a project expected to take several months to complete.
While an exact date for Chivas’ return to Estadio Jalisco has not been confirmed, the move could take place as early as the Clausura 2025 tournament or in the next season.
Chivas owner Amaury Vergara shared his vision for the future of Akron Stadium. Beyond meeting FIFA’s requirements, the upgrades aim to transform the fan experience. In the coming years, fans can look forward to ordering food and drinks directly from their seats, purchasing official merchandise with a QR code, and enjoying interactive experiences during matches.
Vergara also highlighted other improvements underway at Akron, including the installation of a state-of-the-art LED lighting system, a new sound system, and advanced Wi-Fi — making it the first stadium in Mexico to offer this service.
“This is a great opportunity to show the world what Mexico is really about,” said Vergara. “We are a wonderful country that loves soccer. We bring passion, joy, and the most fans to the World Cup. This is our moment to shine.”
With Estadio Akron joining Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and Estadio BBVA in Monterrey as a World Cup host venue, the upgrades promise to leave a lasting legacy for Mexican soccer fans. And for Chivas supporters, the return to Estadio Jalisco offers a special chance to reconnect with the club’s rich history — right where so many unforgettable moments began.
