Jaliscienses to Compete in IOI 2021

Guadalajara, Jalisco – Two students from the state of Jalisco have won first and second place in the 25th Mexican Informatics Olympiad (OMI), and are now preparing to compete in the 2021 International Olympiad in Informatics, to be held in Singapore.

An annual event, the Mexican Informatics Olympiad invites students with a taste for computer programming to compete. In this year’s competition, the state phases brought together more than 10,000 primary, secondary and high school students, of whom only 128 passed to the national phase.

Among the students that moved on to the national competition, which was held virtually on October 10 and 11, were Artie Aarón Ramírez Villa & Alexis Akim Ramírez Villa, two brothers who attend the Urbana 372 school in Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco.

The Mexican Informatics Olympiad competition is regulated by the United Nations (UN), whose objective is to promote the development of the different disciplines of science around the world.

After working for more than 10 hours to solve 6 computer programming problems, Artie and Alexis trounced their competitors, winning the gold and silver medals respectively.

Along with the medals, the Ramírez Villa brothers also earned their place on the preselected programming team that is preparing to represent Mexico in the world’s most prestigious computer science competition for secondary and high school students, the International Olympiad in Informatics, which will be held in Singapore in 2021.

The Jalisco Secretary of Education, Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes, announced the news via his social networks on Wednesday.

“I want to congratulate Artie Aarón Ramírez Villa and Alexis Akim Ramírez Villa, students of the Urbana 372 school in Tamazula de Gordiano, who made history by winning a gold and a silver medal respectively in the XXV Mexican Olympiad of Informatics,” the secretary said.
